A Microcosm of the Village Attends Open House
Pictures and Narrative submitted by Joyce Betts
We made over 50 new friends at our Open House on Oct. 14. Attendees ranged in age from 14 to 70+ and their backgrounds were diverse: some were in the Village house hunting, some were visiting for the first time, some had lived in the Village anywhere from three days to 17 years, some were golfers, some were tennis players looking for a sport that would be easier on their joints, one was a hunter, and one was a young, excited Fountain Lake student with her mother.
Twenty of them came to the free clinic for beginners on the following Tuesday. Watch out for them on the courts and make them welcome! Some of them appear in the following slideshow of photos.
Meet SIMON – HSV Pickleball Club’s Newest Member!
HSV Pickleball Club’s newest member is a battery operated, remote-controlled, programmable ball machine named “SIMON.” He has been donated to the Club through the generosity of members Twilla and Ian Tompkins. Club member BJ Swartout was instrumental in researching and procuring SIMON.
Technically, SIMON is a mean, green, ball-feeding machine with a hopper full of balls. His patience is infinite and he doesn’t give advice. He launches balls at the press of a button at whatever velocity, angle, and interval his partner selects. Players can practice dink, groundstroke, volley, and overhead shots.
HSV Pickleball Club members in good standing may rent SIMON as a hitting partner for $8 per hour, 4-7pm daily (except Wednesday), for practice at the POA Pickleball Courts. Balls are provided. Unfortunately, SIMON does not have the capability to pick up after himself so a ball tube and bucket are provided to pick up balls. All fees go to the HSV Pickleball Club for SIMON’s maintenance and as part of a fundraising effort for new courts.
To make reservations to rent SIMON, Club members should use the www.hsvpickleball.org website link, complete the form with their name and requested time slot and click on the submit button at the bottom of the form and it will email request to the Club member listed as Point of Contact for that time slot. (the Contact SIMON Ball link can be found under the Activities tab on the website). The Point of Contact volunteer will confirm the reservation by return email and meet the renter at the HSV courts to help them sign SIMON out and set him up. It is more efficient if two players rent SIMON at a time, so that players can take turns hitting and picking up balls.
Any pickleball player in the Village is welcome to join the Pickleball Club. The membership form can be downloaded from the website listed above. Club members say, “SIMON loves to make new friends!”
